What Do You Get with That Adoption Donation?

It's more than a fee for transferring a "second hand" dog to another owner. All adult dogs that we take into our care, and later adopt to a family, have been spayed or neutered, vaccinations are brought up to date, fecal check, and heartworm check done. This is the starting point.

To spay costs $110 and the neuter is $70.
Vaccinations are $20
Fecal check $20
Heartworm check is $18
Worming medication is $15
A heartworm postiive dog, treatment is $300
Pain medication is $26
Each dog is microchipped $15
An older dog needs a complete blood panel done before any type of surgery $40
Many dogs need their teeth cleaned and sometimes tooth extractions $110
When the diet gets changed, a dog may need to have anal glands expressed $16
At times there are other ailments that a dog may have, such as eye injuries and the visit to an eye specialist starts at $60.
Orthopedic problems can range from $200-$3500.

Once the basic care is given, there is dog food, a collar and leash and additional dietary support when needed. Our rescues are house trained and crate trained. They are taught their basic manners along with those commands that every dog needs to know. Many get additional training: herding, obedience classes, agility, flyball.

Besides helping to heal that dog's body, we strive to heal the wrong that might have been done, build confidence, a state of calm and happiness and reassure the dog that all will be well from now on. With each dog comes as much history as we are able to collect and as much knowledge on the dog's temperamen and ability to get along with other household members. We explain where potential problems may lie, how to deal with them, and how to teach the dog another way of behaving.

We rescue purebreds as well as some mixes, and although not all of our Border Collies are purebreds, the needs are the same for each dog whether they are purbred or not. A lovely dog with a heart of gold is far better than having a piece of paper that says "purebred." Our goal is not focused primarily on a purebred, but rather matching the right family with our dogs- be it purebred or Border Collie mix. In all honesty, not all families are capable of living with a purebred - but we often find that a BC mix can be the perfect dog.

For the rest of the dog's life, we are here to help with training, behavior, and health questions. If there comes a time where the owner finds he/she cannot keep this dog anymore, we will gladly bring the dog back into the rescue and find another home who will provide loving care.

If an owner needs a place to brag about their rescued Border Collie, to commiserate, is in need of sympathy when the Rainbow Bridge is the last resting place, we are here. We love to hear how our rescued dogs are getting on with their new lives - because this is the reward and the payment for the time and commitment put into each dog who comes through our rescue.
