Beamer

It has been a while since we have talked. Beamer is doing extremely well. We have been walking every morning before I go to work, when I get home at 3:00 we go down to the farm and play/walk. His recall is excellent and I no longer need a leash for him. He has become quite a soccer player and loves the frisbee. Beamer has also put on some weight and has begun to fill out more, exercise I guess? I have stories every night for Libby, we are very happy with him and look forward to adopting our next BC. Thanks for all of your help. 0403

X Sally was rescued from a back yard in Chicago. Her owner had purchased her for his grandkids, who seldom visited. A neighborly angel contacted GLBCR, and now Sally has a nice indoor home: "Sally is doing fine. We've started calling her Sal Sonic because of her boundless energy. Right now she is sitting in Michael's lap while I type this. She has been very good and learned many tricks. She has even learned to watch dog TV (look out the window) with the others and she loves the dog park. Issy is getting much better with her every day. He acts like he doesn't want to play with her, but when he thinks we aren't watching, he does. Sally even had Bandit playing with her yesterday. She plays tug of war with Sierra, but Sierra is a "little" stronger so that usually wears her out quite a bit. I think Sierra has finally met her match, but she is holding up quite well, and usually still ends up wearing out our little bundle of puppy energy in time to play a quick game of fetch or frisbee with us. ...She is having a great time and really learning quickly! Her new tricks include, "sit-up" (beg), "down", "off", "give paw", "go outside". We still think she has a cute bark and sometimes forget to tell her to quit barking when we tell the others to, because her bark isn't as loud or annoying. We'll hush them and then they look us funny because we haven't told her to quit and she will still be barking. Sally is so good that she hasn't had to be "put up" yet! She quits the bad behaviors when we ask her to. She also learned to hide her toys and chews just like Sierra does, so she can get them out when the boys are done with theirs and tease them. She's learned a lot from our dogs." 0503

Gillian

Gillian (now Jessie) is settling into her new home and coming out of her shell more and more each day. The timid and skittish dog the day we brought her home is now prancing though her new surroundings with her tail almost three-quarters of the way up in the air (a big breakthrough for this girl). She's getting along great with our other BC Buzz and plays with her new buddy any time she can. It's hard these days to see one without the other too far behind. 0503

Urak

I would like to let everybody know the obvious changes that I have seen in Urak in the 4 months that he has been my constant buddy. All I knew about his GBI surgery was learnt from the vet's web-site and from Sheila's description of the procedure. It was so important that I knew what to expect and how to handle my new responsibility. I must confess to being really nervous and probably over- cautious at first. However, I think he seemed to know his own limitations and still probably does although I am always the one who curtails the tennis ball/frisbee throwing because enough is enough! My observations at first were that his gait was slightly stiff with the hind legs doing more of the "bunny hop" motion. Also he would sometimes scuff his hind toe nails as we walked on the hard road surface, I could hear them scrape occasionally. He looked thinner because his fur was shaved on his back but of course that is now beautifully thick and shiny. I can honestly say that his gait is now fluid and I don't see any signs of stiffness. His toes very rarely scrape (if at all) and he lifts his leg to urinate about 50% of the time. At first he always peed like a girl! He oozes self confidence and his favorite exercise is fetching the ball in the shallow waters of a local lake. I think that this must be an excellent muscle strengthener but he never ventures out of his depth (obviously never took swimming lessons!) I never throw things too high or encourage him to make athletic leaps although occasionally other people will try and join the game until I explain the rules. He does have a tendency to exaggerate his leaps and pounces beyond what is necessary. I suppose it is his way of showing off and as I see no evidence of any pain I have to let him do what he loves doing. I definitely plan on having x-rays taken next year so that they can be compared with the pre-implant pictures but to my non-expert eye, he is a very healthy and normal border collie. We thank you all for that. I am the 'luckiest of lucky' people to belong to Urak!

7/26/2005 For those of you who remember my former fosters Lewis and Clark I thought I would share a picture of Lewis now Luke that his family sent to me. Quite the difference from the scrawny, scabby little runt that came to me from Ohio.

4-26-04

Deuce is doing VERY well. He started obedience classes a couple weeks ago and has won his instructor over. She has told us that if we ever find ourselves needing a new home for him that she's willing to take him. He is doing SO well in class. He is extremely attentive and loves to show off. At home things are getting much better. He is listening very well and even has found new hobbies other than picking on his two sisters. Deuce has turned out to be a GREAT dog and we're so thankful to have him.

12-30-04 We are expecting a baby in February and Deuce seems to know what is going on (which amazes me). He has shown his talent and smarts learning more tricks (very quickly too) such as picking things up for me when I drop them (since I cannot bend very well) and herding the other dogs out of my way so they can't trip me. He is VERY attentive and protective with me and also very cuddly!! It amazes me at how perceptive he is and how smart he is (he made me type that). Overall he is a great dog!!

05/16/2006 It's been almost 3 years since we adopted Deuce, and he just gets better and better. He is the sweetest dog we've ever met (don't tell our other two). He is very loving and affectionate, even my mother and mother-in-law who are not dog fans at all absolutely love him! I hope that others considering adopting a rescue dog do, it's been very rewarding to our family. My daughter is obsessed with him and he is extermely tolerant of her while she is just learning to "pet" him. :O)

Deuce 06/13/03

Deuce is SUCH a character. He is obsessed with frisbees - already gone through a ton of them. Deuce has won over EVERYONE'S hearts. He is just so silly. He is learning what is expected of him, so he is calming down just a little bit. He has also learned how to shake paw, roll over, sing (too funny), and lay down (consistently). He learns SO fast it amazes me. He was mimicking Abby the other day, Abby was playing dead, and Deuce laid down next to her and did the same thing!!!
