Sam (Ivy) 9/25/03

Little Sam (20 pounds wet) is doing fine.
Sam is a quick learner - Barb had her heeling in straight lines and sitting on stop within 10-15 minutes. She knows her name, knows, come, sit, and "Sam No" when leaving the appropiate play area. She will remain mostly crated overnight for another 2-3 weeks. Well behaved in the house except chews up tissues from bathroom wastebaskets. We'll correct that when we catch her in the act or set up a sting operation with a wastebasket full of tissues. Full obedience training class is next month, with Vet visit this week.
Sam plays well with Boots and Nellie. She and Nellie chase each other around the yard after Nellie catches the frisbee. Sam will fetch a tennis ball but expects me to walk the last ten feet to where she drops the ball.
(She thinks she is training me). Also our Parrot is not a problem - simply ignored by Nellie, Boots, Sam ---- and me.
Thanks again for finding such a wonderful dog and allowing us to adopt her.

10/02/2005 Just a quick update on Samantha (Sam). She has been a Frisbee dog for the past year and a half. When I play twice a day with them, I am throwing two Frisbees one after another. Sam does as well as our border collie Nellie except Sam never seems to want to quit running. Boy can they tire me out. As always, Mr. Boots (Sheltie) simply watches the girls or chases their tails.

Roxanne 9/28/03

I finally got a (cheap) digital camera & thought you would like to see that Roxanne has gained a few inches and has increased her muscle mass.

1/3/2006 Roxanne is doing fantastic and has become so much a part of our family that we just couldn't imagine life without her. We are constantly amazed at how people (even decidedly NON-dog people) react to her. She seems able to win over just about anybody.

Although she is certainly well behaved, and never needs a leash around the property, she definitely has a mind of her own and will not hesitate to hide silently in the bushes or tall grass when being called if she thinks you can't see her. We have just figured out to act as if we can see her, then she gives up and comes in.

Sammy 09/30

Adoption Date: August, 2003
History: Sammy was a stray who turned up on a family's doorstep on Christmas Day, 2002. Their daughter took him home, but since she already had several dogs of her own, she contact GLBCR to help place him. Sammy struck out on his first placement, but managed a timely return to his original foster home. His foster mom had just lost one of her own dogs to illness; and while Sam didn't take his place, his winning personality and wacky antics earned him a forever spot in her home and in her heart. Giving him up once was hard enough; it wasn't going to happen a second time. Now, "The Saminator" is in charge of breaking in the new foster dogs, keeping the backyard safe from squirrel invasions, and being an A-1 cuddle buddy.

2/20/05 Where do I start? Despite his smaller stature, Sammy is still truly "large and in charge." His favorite game is "chase," and the only time he's really interested in getting the ball is if he can steal it from other dogs to make them come after him. He continues to work on his "personal space issues," and is learning that it's all right for other dogs to approach HIS mama, even though he would clearly prefer that they maintain a five foot distance at all times. He excels at "nap yoga" and keeping the back yard safe from squirrel invasion, and is a perfect example of why crate training is a good idea. Sam is indeed a "one of a kind" and I love him to pieces.

Hi all, A quickie report on Bridget, along with a photo. She is getting settled in with us more every day. She is the "spark plug" of the off leash area dogs, making new friends and chasing buddies every day. She is daring, outgoing and flops like a fish through the 2 and 1/2 feet of snow on the ground. It takes about 2 hours to get her pooped enough to where she will settle in for a quiet evening. But it it fun in the doing. She now sleeps out of her crate, having stopped gnawing on everything in sight. She likes it in the "den" under our bed. Maggie and Bridget spend the morning playing mouth games. At last, she has a routine and a happy existence here in Marquette. On slow days, I take her to work with me. She is slowly learning not to bark at the customers. All is well.

Bridget 10-24-03

History: Released from shelter into GLBCR foster care.

11-15-04 One year with Bridget. She has made such a difference around this place and elsewhere. Wherever she goes, she is the life of the party....she's always first one in the water and last to get out. And boy, does she have tales to tell. Her endless energy has let her cover about twice the ground of any other dog I know. Her summer highlight was a nose to nose staredown with a skunk. For some odd reason, the skunk decided not to spray and Bridget figured out not to push her luck. When the day is done, she is our soundest sleeper. This past twelve months has been quite an adventure, believe us....an adventure we are sure glad we haven't missed.

11/14/2005 Bridget is as frisky as ever, keeping us all on our toes. She remains an inexahustible dynamo. Happily, she can be run out of energy once in a while, but not very often. She still does her woods walks with zest. Both girls go to the office with me each day; Bridget is the greeter, while Maggie is the supervisor. At long last, with the help of Maggie's constant mothering, Bridget has learned some manners with folks whose attention she welcomes. Every once in a while, she will spook and make a bee line for her "den" under our bed. Such episodes are rare. Up next to Maggie, Bridget could not be more different. They are like reverse images of each other in every way. With both of them, we feel like we have the whole bc world right in the house. We are grateful for such a wonderful sprite of a dog.

06/02/2006 Bridget continues to light up the place with here antics. She's the first to venture out on the trail, digging about for critters, and first in the pond for a cool down. She is first one up in the morning and last one to bed. We count it a good day when she is tired enough to hit the hay before the rest of us. At work, she has settled down and enjoys the routine. Now that Maggie is getting on and sometimes skips the daily walk in the woods, Bridget takes up the mantle as chief herder. She is a lovely animal and a spark for all of us. We are sure glad to have her around here. She is a real pleasure to live around.

Madison (Starr) 11/2003

Foster Name: Starr
Adoption Name: Madison
Adoption Date: November, 2003
History: Starr was relinquished by a family who realized she had far too much energy and potential to be living in a subdivision, and wanted her to have a better life. She was adopted by her foster mom and is now living the life of a happy Border Collie.

11/30/03 This little girl is one of the most amazing dogs! She has got so much potential it's scary. We've been doing flyball, herding and some easy SAR stuff. She has gotten over her spookiness toward strangers. My male BC LOVES people so she gains confidence from him. She fits in so well here and man does she like to work and I sure can keep her busy. She's not perfect she's chewed 1 belt, 1 good shoe, 1 soccer shoe, put a hole in a turtle neck and a pair of shorts. I tend to take a nap before bed on the couch and she finds "activities" for herself. It's an easy fix...I just can't fall asleep on the couch!
