Mona

Mona is an 11 month old female Border Collie, with a classically marked, slightly wavy, rough coat. She may be a mix, but with what other breed is uncertain. Her feet are unusually large for a BC, as are her ears, yet her body is long and lean. Though her legs are short and heavy, this girl has jumping ability. This disproportionate appearance, somehow only adds to her adorability.

Mona a happy, playful, friendly girl, who acts very puppyish. Because she likes the interaction of other dogs, a home with canine playmate is suggested. Though she does not have an intense ball drive, she does like playing with balls and toys. She also enjoys long walks and swimming. She is active, but not high energy. Mona's name was selected because she tends to be verbal. She's not a barker, but makes rumbling noises during play, which sounds like groans and moans. She will bark at cats, even chase them, yet would not hurt them.

Mona and her son Odin were adopted by the same family. Please scroll down to Odin for updates on Mona and Odin.

Odin

Born: 10-9-04

6/8/2005 Our "puppies" are really something else....such wonderful sources of entertainment around here. We all get a good belly laugh everyday from each of them. But first you must know what an absolute peach our Mona is. What a little lady our girl is (except when she drinks and eats...well, and when she plays...but other than that...) and the absolute most affectionate dog, LOVES to cuddle with me, or anyone for that matter. She is still very patient with Odin, who really annoys the heck out of her sometimes...as any good adolescent son is wont to do. But she and Odin are quite the team. For instance, the other day when cleaning my room, I came upon an old, short statue of Louis Armstrong....the type made of plaster, from the '70s, with really large heads, kind of characatures..Anyway, I found ours in a corner and had forgotten about it. I took a break from cleaning, went into the Living room, sat, had an iced tea; then a commotion started. The dogs, Odin first, were barking, growling, just going crazy. Thinking they had spotted a deer out the doorwall, I went into the family room, no dogs. Went to the bedroom, and there they had poor Loius Armstrong cornered. He wasn't going ANYWHERE, by golly. They were gonna hold him. They were ready to attack the poor statue. I laughed so hard I almost wet myself. They just didn't know what to make of it.

6/8/2005 Then, the other day, my son was bringing in the groceries and had a big box of Snapple he was carrying in. Mona went nuts. She growled and barked until she finally realized it was just Zach with a box. She looked a little humiliated after...and of course, laughing at her didn't help. Desdemona Suzette, aka Monasue (she will come to her middle name sometimes...when she feels like it) is just such a wonderful companion and playmate. I just found out too, that Mona "comes" much better to finger snapping rather than just requesting Mona, come. She loves everyone here (but I am still her favorite). Odin loves everybody, everywhere. He is such a good boy, has a lot to learn, but just loves life, people, everything....except gettting his nails trimmed. Odin now weighs about 62#, quite an ox. He is very, very smart....listens and responds to sentences. He is just exuberant, funny, sneaky and hilarious and somewhat mischevious. Mona too. But she is growing up into a real snuggler. I will say it again and again, Thank you.

Petey

Petey has to warm up to other dogs at first but once he knows you, he is your best friend. Petey is very loving, loyal and affectionate. Petey does better with children over the age of five. He needs lots of space to play and loves being outside. He loves people and prefers not to have his owner gone all day. He knows how to fetch and loves his rope toy. He is so at peace outside.

Update 5/11/05
Hi Guys, How's everbody doin'? Dad's gone and changed my name again. Last time we went to Doggy Park, I got sort of caught up in the excitement of being off-leash and jumped into the river to play with the Retrievers and Labs. Then I found some great mud puddles to roll in. Dad wasn't too happy since he had just given me a bath a week before. So now he calls me "Stinky Magoo". Still doing our walking regimen. We average 6 miles a day but it isn't so bad. Dad walks pretty slow and stops a lot to admire the wildflowers or to check out the construction sites. Speaking of construction sites I got in a tiny bit of trouble a couple of weeks ago. Dad was doing yard work and momentarily left the gate to the outer yard open. So I decided to go for a little juant. Dad chased me across several yards; then suddenly he stopped and shrieked "NO-O-O-O" just like a little girl. Turns out I had just run across his neighbor's freshly cemented driveway. So for a while my name was "Devil Dog". I've also been helping dad with the yardwork by digging holes in the inner yard. Oh, yes, and I still carry his socks and underwear into the living room when he has company over. Life is good! Be talkin' to ya. Calvin

Update 4/5/05
Hi Guys, Well today I'm off to the Vet for my spring checkup, including my heartworm test. Don't relish the thought of being stuck with a needle. Think I'll take the Vet's finger in my mouth and look him in the eye as if to say "now we're not going to hurt each other today, are we?!". Dad's been taking me on daily "walkies" of around 6 miles. Seems both of us have put on some weight over the winter ( I'm around 50 pounds). He's also taken me to "doggie park" a couple of times. It's an off-leash dog park set up by Milwaukee County. He doesn't let me off my leash, though. He says I need more obedience training. Anyway, I've attached a picture of me at the park. Speaking of obedience training, I still can't seem to resist chewing on anything I can get hold of - including dad's slippers, auntie Betty's pantyhose, etc. In fact, it's earned me a new moniker around here - The Calvinator . For a while it almost looked like I would get a brother. Dad kept monitoring the reports on Valentine on the Great Lakes Border Collie website. Valentine had a crippled leg and it didn't look like anyone wanted to deal with the cost of corrective surgery. But recently someone did adopt Val. Well, that's about all the news from here. Oh, except dad is still upset that those badass Illini beat his UW-Milwaukee Panthers. Don't forget the picture.

Brooke

Brooke is a lovebug who loves to run around, then race up to you and plop down on her little behind for some cuddling. She is a beautiful little thing, a wildly patterned blue merle, expressive eyes and very mobile ears. At 32 lbs. she's just the right size for your lap. Of course, she likes to go for carrides and walks, and she LOVES to swim and splash around in the water. She can leap up like a gazelle, as though she has springs in her legs but has not make any attempts to escape the fenced-in yard. With the right guidance, she would be perfect for agility. Her dream home would be as an only dog, or maybe with a submissive male who doesn't mind if she takes over leadership. Brooke is ok with dog- experienced cats. Older children are welcome in her life. Border collies have been bred for herding instinct, never for color. This has resulted in a wonderful array of colors that are all beautiful. Brooke is a blue merle, which is not as common as the traditional black and white, but is preferred by some, and very striking. It is not uncommon for merle dogs to have one or two pretty blue eyes, which only adds to their character"

Skye

Skye is a loving, sweet, smiling 10 year old. Always ready for tennis ball fetch, and an occasional frisbee. She eagerly gets her leash for walks. She really enjoys cooling off in her wading pool, but doesn't like any deeper water. She's been known to lay around a bit after a busy day. She's been spoiled by treats and is 50 lbs. She loves anything dairy and especially ice cubes. Skye is afraid of a few things such as loud voices, thunderstorms or strong winds, fireworks, airplanes, kitchen timers, and toasters (we have no clue about these last two). If you put her in her crate and play classical music she settles right down. She knows many verbal commands such as come, sit, stay, speak, shake, laydown (or plotz), go find a ball, go to your room (or cage), go eat your food, off, back up (or move), heel, drop it, (put it) in my hand, give kisses, and sing (with prompting). She's very compliant when being brushed or clipping her nails. Skye is UTD on vaccines and is on Revolution (flea, heartworm, and mite control). She should be the sole pet in her new home but does get along with a small dog that comes over for visits. She is better with older children who can help her stay well occupied. She's just a sweetie!
