Unfortunately, we do not always have enough foster space to accommodate the many Border Collies who need to be rescued. And luckily, some owners who need to place their dogs keep them until a suitable home is found. The dogs below are listed as a service to those individuals or other rescue groups. Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue has not met these dogs and therefore, makes no representations of the health, temperament, or suitability of these dogs. Nonetheless, they still need homes. If you are interested in one of the listed dogs please contact the owner/shelter directly. These are not GLBCR foster dogs and it is not necessary to fill out an adoption application. All adoption details will have to be negotiated with the owners of the listed dogs.

Please be patient while the pictures download.

We try to keep these pages up to date. Please email us if you are having difficulties getting in touch with one of the listed rescuer or if a dog has been adopted.

Meet Joey! This wonderful guy is believed to be a soft, medium coat, Border Collie/Springer Spaniel mix and at best guess 10 months old, but no possible way to know for sure. He will be a medium size dog (25 pounds at best guess) when full grown. He's working on house breaking (he will tell you when he wants out by going to the door) and crate training and is making progress. He will need additional training with house breaking as well as plenty of chew toys with him being a teething puppy. Joey is curious of cats, but respects them, and plays well with his siblings. Joey will fit into just about any family. Joey LOVES playing fetch and playing with toys they are his favorite things to do. I am his third foster home. Before me he got along great with children (I do not have any). He gets along wonderfully with my 60 pound shepard mix rescue. Right now Joey's personality is submissive, however if he does not want to play with our dog he will let her know by showing his teeth. He does not jump up on people that I've seen. He loves when we cook dinner, the smells make him very curious. He loves sitting at your feet at the table hoping for a scrap (which he never gets). Joey loves chewing on his toys since he is a puppy, so he will need to be supervised when playing with toys that can easily be chewed up. He is learning to walk on a leash, but will need additional work with that. But that is simple. Joey is located in Ft. Wayne Indiana. We are willing to drive a reasonable distance (an hour or so) to meet half way, or to deliver him to you if you are unable to come and pick him up. Joey is a very quiet boy. He doesn't bark or growl much at all, only when he is crated and we are leaving him by himself. He is your typical high energy border collie and needs to be kept busy all of the time. We are working on tricks, but as of now he does not know any. He does however understand what no means and he minds very well. Joey is current on all of his shots, flea prevention, and is neutered. To see more pictures go to www.perfectpawspetrescue.com click on animals available for adoption and go to Joey! The adoption fee is $200.00. This fee includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery. Current DHLPP, Kennel Cough, and Rabies (if old enough) vaccinations. Heartworm test (if old enough), heartworm prevention, flea/tick prevention treatment, and de-worming treatment. He will go home with a collar, leash, ID tag, training DVD and his vaccination record. Please contact Sarah Schenkel at kschenkel2100@comcast.net if you would like to adopt or even foster (everything from vet care to food to flea prevention is included for fosters) this wonderful little guy or have any questions. He will be a wonderful addition to any family. Joey

Sue

Are you looking for a dog that loves to snuggle? Loves to go for walks? Loves to ride in the car? Loves sheep? Loves agility? Sue is the dog for you! This little diamond in the rough is a 10 month old purebred smooth coat female that just loves to be with her people. Few things upset Sue, she doesn't react to loud noises, running people, bikes, or skateboarders. She currently is living with a 15 month old baby, and allows petting from her, but also knows how to keep her distance.

Sue originally came from a farm in Kentucky where she was chained to a barn. A family rescued her and brought her to their home. While she was with this family, it was discovered that Sue would do better in a house with no cats and only male dogs. She would like a human or two to curl up with on the couch, though!

Although Sue has not had a lot of formal training in her life, she is a quick learner and is currently enrolled in basic obedience. She knows sit, down, stand, swing, front, and go to your kennel. Speaking of kennels, she is wonderful in hers. She goes in on command and rests in there quietly. She walks wonderfully on loose leash, too. But don't let all this wonderful obedience fool you, she is a young medium energy border collie that is just hitting adolescence, so she needs a home with some rules and experience with training young dogs.

Sue has been heartworm tested (negative), and is on preventative. She will soon have all her immunizations, and be spayed and microchipped as well as having any other healthcare she needs.

Sue is being fostered in the Chicagoland area of Illinois. For more info on Sue, you can read her blog at www.bcsue.blogspot.com or to apply to adopt her email Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL) at techni@midwest.net .

Hi! My name is Harley!  My family says I am truly  sweet and lovable. I am a 3 year old BC mix who  has a lot of great qualities.    First I am very smart and I learn very quickly.  I love to play frizbee and go for walks.   I enjoy being brushed, scratched and petted.  And I don't do bad things like dig holes in the yard and never ever chewed up or destroyed any property.

I would love to sit on your lap if you will let me otherwise I'll just snuggle next to you.  I like to give kisses too unless you say no.

Mom and Dad say I need a new home though because Dad has a new job and is harly ever home and he my great buddy.  I would like a home where you would be with me a lot and play with me and run or walk with me.  I don't know if I would like kids or not.  I only know one little kid and I like the attention...probably a big kid I can play with.  And mom says I would need a home to myself or with a bigger dog like me.  I guess I am too big and get a little much for my Shih Tzu buddy at home.
Oh, and mom says to tell you I am in good health and current on all shots!

Piper Piper is a beautiful, loving 4 yr. old Border Collie mix who just simply needs a home where the people have room and time for her.  Her current owners have no room in yard for a dog run so Piper has been a house dog all the time. She is very scared of storms, fireworks and all loud noises.  Piper needs a loving, patient, experienced family to deal with her fears and give her the exercise she so desperately needs.  She will reward that family with love and loyalty.  Piper is in NW Indiana. PATTI

April 28, 2008

Many people ask why adopt a 7 year old dog? Here are a few answers: she is fully housetrained, we know her personality, we know most of her habits (good and bad), she won't chew your couch, shoes, etc. Patti and her brother (who I also fostered) have had a very sad life. Her brother has since moved on to his permanent home and now it is Patti's turn. The two of them lived with an older couple, when the husband died the wife did not take care of the dogs and left them crated for about 3 years. When they were brought into rescue it took 4 baths to get them cleaned up.

Aside from some mild separation anxiety and fear of thunderstorms (which is better with Bach's Rescue Remedy) Patti has been given a clean bill of health and is just awaiting her final home. She has been on a diet plan and is getting fit and trim. Her ideal home would be one where she is not left for long days and is an only dog or has just one canine sibling. She loves attention and loves to follow you around the house. She has excellent recall and would make a great pet for someone who loves to putter in the garden and is looking for a companion. She walks nicely on the leash and enjoys going in the car for a ride.

Patti is spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations, heartworm negative and on prevention, and is micro-chipped. She is being adopted through APA of Southern Illinois. She is being fostered near Ann Arbor MI.

Wally is a 5 year old (Oct 2002) male border collie mix (possibly blue heeler). He is about 50 lbs and has a lovely soft coat. Wally is very healthy, current on all vaccinations and is neutered. We first met Wally as a skinny and nervous 5 month old puppy at the Chicago Anti-cruelty Society shelter. Since then he has lived with us, his family, in a small townhouse in Chicago. His family includes another older male border collie and they are best friends. However, Wally is probably best suited to a home where he is the only dog, since he really wishes he were the center of attention, and would provide a much needed boost to his self-confidence. Wally loves his family, taking any opportunity to get a rub, always lying close by. He knows to sit near the dinner table at meal times, but not too close. He likes people and will greet people he knows with a kind of playful howl, however, he is often on guard around strange people, particularly males. He gets very anxious around young children, despite much experience with the 2 young children that joined his family 3 years ago, and would do best in a home without that stress. He barks mostly only when performing his watch dog duties. Wally is a very accomplished retriever of frisbees and tennis balls, and will eagerly take up a game. He loves going for long runs, though we have not been able to give him enough of those over the last few years. Wally is a great listener, and is always ready to do what you ask.

Wally is a sweet dog who wants to please, but needs someone that has the patience and time to teach him how.

One of the more handsome border collie's around, Marley is a charming boy with a smile that can't be topped. At first we thought he was a mix, but we have since determined he is a purebred bc. He's about 5 years old, and gets along well with cats and other dogs. He often prefers to ignore other pets, and focus on people which are his real love. Marley
forms a strong bond with people, and his favorite activities include walks, hikes, car rides, swimming, and anything else that includes you. Although he's not interested in balls and other flying objects, he loves squeaky toys and stuffed toys. Marley is always eager to please and quick to learn new things. Although he is active and playful outside, indoors he is calm and considerate. He often accompanies me to the office where he interacts with many people, and always is the perfect gentleman. He is good with children, but has not been around infants or toddlers. Thunderstorms scare him, but as long as he is with his people, he remains calm until it is over. Marley is an excellent companion and looking forward to a family that will love him as much as he will love them.

Marley is housetrained and crate trained. All Marley's immunizations are current, he is neutered and microchipped. He is on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

He is being fostered in southern IL near Carbondale , IL . For more info or to apply to adopt Marley please email Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL) at techni@midwest.net

Larry

Larry - Approximately 8 year old BC that was rescued off the table from being PTS! Larry is a very good boy who LOVES to be with people. Aside from being a little hard of hearing Larry is in good health and has a beautiful coat. He is a bit hard of hearing but does well when you speak to him up close. Larry is gentle, easy to handle, and seems to get along with other dogs no problem. His favorite things to do is to be loved on, play fetch, and be brushed. Because of his age Larry has a hard time with hard food and is currently on a soft food diet. Purina seemed most familiar with him, and his foster mom is going to try the new wet Beneful. How Larry came to be without a home is a mystery to his rescuers and current foster mom. He is a wonderful dog who was very skittish and unsure when he first arrived in his foster home, but after a few days of TLC Larry has really blossomed. He seemed to be well taken care of, and probably lived in the same home all his life. We're just unsure what happened to that home. Larry would make a great companion.

Hi!  My name is Nelly.  I'm five.  Don't you love my shiny coat?  Unlike most of the dogs up here, I've led a pretty charmed life.  I've been in my current home since I was a puppy, and my parents love me.  I've never been in a shelter and never been abused.  Here's the scoop:  they're expecting a human baby soon, and they think I might be too excited for a human baby.  Sometimes I like to herd them. Sometimes they make me nervous.  I understand, but it does make me very, very sad. See all these pictures of me?  Ain't I just the cutest?  If you adopt me, I promise I'll be your bestest, goodest girl.  I just am not too good with the little ones.  Who needs a little one anyway?  I'm cute enough for anyone! I'm respectful of boundaries, trained on an electric fence, good with respectful doggie playmates, and a very attentive, eager girl.  I might even like agility or obedience, if you're game.  Please contact my family right away.  With looks like these, I won't be here long!
Love,
Nelly

Zip Zippy is a "older" boy from Harlan Kentucky (I would age fast there too!) who came with 4 kinds of worms: hooks, whips, rounds and heartworms.  He was a stray who was going to the shelter as his next step.  He has been treated for heartworm, had his teeth cleaned, blood checked, was neutered and is now searching for his new home.  He will be microchipped as well.  Probably 8 years old, he is very vigorous and lively, loves running and jumping and is very loving to everyone.  He does not love all male dogs.  In our house he does not like the old shep mix and he also really disliked the  foster chow mix, the others are fine. Cats are great, he is housetrained and does not chew things except toys and Nylabones.  His teeth are well worn as though he chewed tennis balls, says the vet.  Tennis balls wear the teeth down quickly, she notes for the tennis ball fans! :>D Interested parties may contact Lois Rose of dogs Deserve Better for an application.  check out our website www.dogsdeservebetter.org . We help chained out and penned out dogs and also work to educate and legislate when we are able.  Other pics available on request. Lois Rose 937 684 7421

Shadow Jr

Shadow Jr. 02-19-08

Shadow's goal in life is to have fun. He is a happy boy who loves his special ball. Shadow carries his puzzle ball around with him almost continuously. He will bring his ball to you and drop it at your feet so you can throw it for him. Over and over and over again. He is so full of energy that when I am done throwing this ball, he will take it to the other dogs and try to entice them to play. But, it then becomes more of a game of keep away.

Shadow's other love in his life is food. Shadow is a very intelligent boy and is extremely food motivated. This would make Shadow easy to train. Shadow would be an excellent candidate for fly ball.

Shadow has come a long with way in learning what is appropriate for his position in the pack. Shadow enjoys sitting on my lap but he does tend to get a bit heavy after awhile, as he weighs about 50 lbs. He would love to sleep on my tummy, but has to settle with sleeping next to me.

Shadow would enjoy a home with older kids who can keep up with his energy level. He needs a lot of exercise to keep him focused on appropriate behaviors.

Shadow is neutered, microchipped, is current on shots and heartworm preventative. He is being fostered in southern Illinois about 60 miles east of St. Louis.

For more information, or to apply to adopt Shadow, please contact Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL) at techni@midwest.net

Chico is a high energy Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog Mix. Chico loves to play and get belly rubs. He is a herding breed and would do best with a lot of land and ultimately on a farm. If not, he would need daily exercise and would be great for agility or fly ball or frizbee. He is just left alone for too much of the day, and often gets no exercize at night much of the time with present home situation.

Chico has attended Puppy Kindergarten and Grade School classes via the Michigan Humane Society and passed with flying colors. With a treat, he obeys the following commands: Sit, Down, Off (we use this for the kitchen counter, etc.), Stay, rollover, crawl, jay (my son taught him this which means up on two feet and walk forward) and paw.

I wouldn't recommend he be placed in a home with small children as he likes to jump to greet you sometimes. Chico needs lots of bones and chew toys and he's a heavy chewer.

Located in the Detroit metro area.

Please contact Vinitta at shinitta@aol.com if interested.

Sapphire (Saphie) is a 10 month old, blue merle border mix collie puppy who was found  tied up on a ten pound chain in someone's backyard. Ten pounds may not seem like a lot until you realize that this little girl is only 28 pounds.  She has only been in her foster home for a few days, but
she is a true gem.  Beautiful as a sapphire, yes, but more so in her vibrant personality.  She is friendly, playful, obedient, and housebroken.  She loves kids and plays ball, tug, and loves to chew  on bones.  When you're tired playing, she doesn't mind as she entertains herself. Then she will cuddle with you for a nap.  She has stolen our hearts.  She is heartworm negative, has her shots and will be spayed and microchipped soon so she can go to her safe and loving home.

Sapphire is being fostered in the St. Louis, MO area. For more information or to inquire about adopting her contact Chris at techni@midwest.net (Animal Protective Association of Southern IL).

Rex is a Black lab/ border collie mix who is a Hurricane Katrina Rescue pet. He is loving and sweet and cuddly and gets along great with other dogs! He would probably do well with cats too, but our cat is old and crabby. He has been in obedience classes and learns fast, but his busy family hasn't been able to keep it up. His face looks more like a lab, but his has a gorgeous shiny long hair coat and fluffy tail like a border collie. He barks at strangers when appropriate (great watch dog) but is otherwise friendly and quiet. His owner is having to travel extensively for work. Her preteen son (whose dog this is) spends half his time away at his dad's so he can't always care for him. Rex is really a great dog for a family who has more time to give to him!  Contact: Judy at drjudyg@hotmail.com   phone: 847-282-5713 In Chicago suburb area
