Unfortunately, we do not always have enough foster space to accommodate the many Border Collies who need to be rescued. And luckily, some owners who need to place their dogs keep them until a suitable home is found. The dogs below are listed as a service to those individuals or other rescue groups. Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue has not met these dogs and therefore, makes no representations of the health, temperament, or suitability of these dogs. Nonetheless, they still need homes. If you are interested in one of the listed dogs please contact the owner/shelter directly. These are not GLBCR foster dogs and it is not necessary to fill out an adoption application. All adoption details will have to be negotiated with the owners of the listed dogs.

Please be patient while the pictures download.

We try to keep these pages up to date. Please email us if you are having difficulties getting in touch with one of the listed rescuer or if a dog has been adopted.

Clyde, April 9

Clyde is a three and a half year old black and white, male, blue eyed, hunka burnin' love. Shy at first, Clyde quickly acclimates to new people and will ask for love and attention as soon as his "people" sit down! One of his favorite things to do is to stick his head under your arm and bump his nose against your face (he was taught to do that - it's a kiss!) and then roll over for a belly rub. Fair's fair after all, doncha think? Kisses for belly rubs!

Clyde must have been corrected somewhat harshly with hands, as when you reach for him he will duck his head and move away. Take a seat, however and kisses are soon to follow.

He has never had a potty accident in the house, and during the day he has frequent opportunity to go outside. Clyde is crated when we are gone, but he does not like the crate and will bark like crazy if he is crated when we are home. He doesn't need to be crated if someone is with him and will wait by the door to go out if he needs to potty. He becomes nervous during thunderstorms and we crate him during those times as well. The crate allows him to settle down and he doesn't protest being crated if there is a storm in progress.

Clyde needs a pretty high energy home. We would classify him as a medium active bc, and needs routine exercise and mental stimulation. He has some herding instinct, and did well in his herding evaluation last week. He will head off to Agility class in two weeks and we will be happy to provide an update on his agility fun.

Clyde respects the fence, and will need a fenced yard.

Clyde is being fostered near St. Louis, MO. He is neutered, heartworm tested and on preventative and microchipped. He is current on shots and has been wormed.

Skipper, April 11, 2008

Are you looking for an active playmate with near-perfect house manners? Skipper may be your guy—he's our most happy fella!

This sturdy young fellow is just over a year old, 40 lbs and 19” at the shoulder. He's a very companionable dog who's just tickled when he's allowed to hang out where the people are. He's on restricted activity until his neuter incision heals up completely, but he can't wait to play—he's forever searching us out with a ball or squeaky, hoping for a toss. He settles well without whining or fussing and walks well on lead.

Skipper has been HWorm tested (negative) and started on heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative. He is neutered and up to date on his shots. He will be microchipped soon. He is being fostered west of Indianapolis.

For more information on adopting Skipper, please contact Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of Southern IL) at techni@midwest.net

Clarke is very friendly, likes to cuddle and look at you with those intense BC eyes.  He is great with kids and cats.  He loves the kids and leaves the cats alone...perfect...and also housebroken.   Although he loves to play outside, chasing a ball, jumping  around, playing with other dogs, inside he's fairly calm.  In the evening, he sits/lays quietly on the floor.   His coat is beautiful, deep black and very curly.

Clarke is a purebred border collie about a year or so old. He is neutered, heartworm tested negative (and on preventative) and up to date on all shots. He also is microchipped.

He is being fostered in the St. Louis, MO area. For more information on Clarke, or to apply to adopt him please contact Chris at techni@midwest.net . Clarke is an Animal Protective Association of Southern IL foster dog.

Heidi 2.23.08

Heidi is a very affectionate and loving girl. She is a black and white, purebred (we have papers) border collie. She is housetrained, crate trained and great with most other dogs. She has no reaction to our cat, even if he walks past her nose!

Heidi's favorite activity is to be with her people! She is content to lie on her bed near you, or rest her head in your lap while adoringly looking in your face.

She would be a wonderful pet for a single person's best friend, or with a lower key family.

This mellow girl came in to rescue as her owner was moving, and couldn't take her with the family. At first when Heidi came to us, she was pretty indifferent to people, and would not listen very well. Now she is a very happy girl, and interested in exploring everything!

Heidi sneaks up on your heart! She has a special quality which makes everyone adore her after spending even a few minutes with her.

Heidi has some health issues, although nothing terribly serious. Her hips are not in good condition, and she recently had surgery on her left hip. She will soon have surgery on her right one, and full recovery is expected. She supposedly has an issue with her eyes, although her vision appears to be fine. We will be taking her to an eye specialist soon.

All Heidi's vaccinations are up to date, she is spayed and was heartworm tested negative (and is on preventative). She has also been microchipped.

Heidi is 6 years old, and is being fostered in the St. Louis region. For more information, or to inquire about adopting Heidi contact Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL) at techni@midwest.net

Cusco hasn't had much of a real doggy life in his 18 months.  He was tied to his dog house with little or no human interaction and then when the kids did try to come near he was so overjoyed his exhuberance scared them away.  He is currently at the Copper County Humane Society in Houghton, MI.  He has been working on his socialization skills and doing nicely.  He desperately needs a home where people will love him and he can please them.  He does well with other dogs (mostly females and non dominant males.)  He is good outside the kennel and would be great for kids over 10.  He loves toys and playhing ball and fetch now that he knows what fun people can be.  Cusco is a BC mix probably with Lab.  He is in excellent health and up-to-date on all shots.  Contact Jill Henson at jill.henson@chartercom.com   or call 906 334 2466.

Kirra 2.3.08

Stunning, smart and spirited. Kirra is all of that, in one petite package! She has boundless energy, a love of life and is curious about everything! One of her favorite things to do is to chase and play with our other dogs. She will play as gentle or as rough as the other dog dictates. Another favorite activity of Kirra's is to run all over the house collecting stuffed toys, and to mound them up in a pile. She now can carry up to three toys in her mouth at the same time!

Kirra is a purebred, black and white medium coat “prick ear” border collie about a year old. She is very friendly with everyone, although she will bark at strangers initially.

She is mostly housetrained. She has never had a potty accident in the house, although we take her outside frequently. Kirra is crate trained, but will bark like crazy if she is crated and her furry friends are romping in the house and having fun. She still will jump on furniture and the kitchen counter, but is improving all the time.

Kirra needs a pretty high energy home. We would classify her as a very active bc, and needs routine exercise and mental stimulation. She loves to play “ball”, mostly brings it back for you to toss. And toss again. She also has some herding instinct, and is quite reactive. Part of this is from her being in a cage for three months before she came to us.

She would do best either as an only dog, or with another very active and outgoing dog. She is fine with our cat, but she will chase him but not hurt him. She is too high strung for small children, as she would knock them over by mistake. She will need a fenced yard.

Kirra is being fostered in southern IL near St. Louis. She is spayed, heartworm tested and on preventative and microchipped. She is current on shots and has been wormed.

To learn more about Kirra, or to apply to adopt her contact Chris at Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of Southern IL) at techni@midwest.net

Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois is a licensed, not for profit corporation domiciled in Illinois. We mostly do border collie rescue, however we help all breeds of dogs. We have foster homes located as far south as Louisville, KY and as far north as Traverse City, MI. Please see our petfinder site at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IL153.html

Oreo is a one year old border collie mix who spent the first year of her life isolated and abused. She has made wonderful progress after being removed from that situation. She loves other dogs, uses petdoors, and has bonded with the new people in her life. She is not destructive, and can be left alone in the house during the day. Her one flaw is that she is suspicious of new people and new dogs and she meets new people with snapping and growling. It takes her awhile to warm up to strangers. Her ideal home would include a fenced in yard, no young children, and perhaps another young dog. She's smart, cuddly, wants to please her owner. She will need some time to forget the bad things that happened to her. She deserves to be a part of a real family who loves her.

Lucky

Hi, my name is Lucky. I am an 8-year-old Border Collie/Alaskan Malamute mix. I lived in the same house since I was a puppy but my owners could not keep me any longer. I was in the animal shelter for two weeks but now I am in a foster home. My foster parents are really great. They spend a lot of time with me. They are showing me how to sit, stay, come, wait and walk nicely on a leash. I have practically mastered all of these commands. I weigh 66 pounds and am far more border collie than malamute. I really love to run but I come back when called. Physically, I am in great shape. My physical at the vet's in March showed that I am in perfect health without any problems. I am up to date on vaccinations and have been microchipped. I love spending time with people. We can run in the backyard or I am just as happy sitting at my foster parent's feet while they do things. I love to play with toys and especially like playing tug-o-war. I am a really quick learner and I plan on taking the Canine Good Citizen test in a few weeks. I am really intelligent. I know that I am 8 but I have a lot of energy in me. We go for walks every evening and I love getting outside. I have found that when I walk nicely on the leash, I get a longer walk. I am a great eater and am fully potty-trained. I get along with other dogs and really love people. I really like my foster parents but I know that if I get adopted they will be able to help another dog in need. If you have the room and interest, I would love to meet you. Please call my foster parents at 773-682-5539 or send them an email at cute_malamute@yahoo.com . Thank you for looking.

Stella is a beautiful, sweet 1 1/2 year old Border Collie mix. She is playful and loving. She adores car rides and loves to snuggle in bed with you, and loves to play fetch. She is good with young children and other pets (cats, birds), but is a little shy and submissive around other dogs. She has had beginning obedience training and was voted by her class as the most improved and also has passed the AKC Canine Good Citizens test. She learns quickly and is eager to please. She needs a home where she will receive lots of love and tummy rubs. Preferably where someone is home most of the day (i.e. a stay-at-home mom, retired person, or someone who works out of their house). She is spayed, micro-chipped, and up-to-date on all her vaccines.

Stella lives in Illinois.  Contact Amy at email: amy@faubl.com

Shadow
10.2.07

Shadow is a fun dog! His favorite game is to chase the water from the hose, and he will get soaked trying to capture the water. He also loves to play fetch with his tennis ball.

He needs a lot of exercise and attention. He would be happy as an only dog or with another dog (as long as they play hard). He loves our cat, and follows him around routinely.

Shadow is a border collie/fox terrier mix. He has some of the best qualities of both breeds and some of the not so good qualities! He is very intense, smart and biddable. He needs an owner who will set (and keep) his boundaries.

Shadow is housetrained, crate trained and a love bug in the evening when he is tired. As much as Shadow loves to play, he also will lay quietly beside you when need be. However, if another dog wants to play he will be “on it”!

When Shadow came to us, he chased cars. He is almost over that but needs a fenced yard. His recall is quite good. We would not recommend Shadow for small children as he has a pretty intense prey drive.

Shadow is neutered, up to date on shots and microchipped. He has been heartworm tested negative, and is on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. He has also had a fecal.

He is being fostered in southern Illinois about 60 miles east of St. Louis . To inquire about adopting Shadow, please email Chris at techni@midwest.net . Shadow is an Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL) foster dog.

Heather came to 2nd Chance Animal Rescue 5 weeks ago. She was picked up by animal control and had 7 puppies 2 days later. She came to me the day the pups were born. She was guarding and over protective with me for about 2 days by which time I had established dominance and from then on we have gotten along just fine. She has been less good with strangers. When the pups were about 1 week an old man walked between her and the puppies in the crate. She bit him on the ankle.

She corrects well with a stern NO. She appears highly trainable. She is not real high energy and has done well confined in the kitchen with nothing much to do except care for her litter. (Like that is nothing to do!) She has not done any destructive things except the occasional clearing of the counter. I was on vacation for a week and a friend stayed at my house and became a temporary foster for her. That worked out well with no problems. She does do some food guarding.

01/27/08

One of Sadie's main purposes in life is to play. This gal is full of energy. She could run and play all day. Sadie has a love of life and it show s in her personality. A high energy girl, she needs a lot of exercise to help deal with some anxiety issues. Sadie would love to be with her human 100% of the time, and has a bit of separation anxiety. Exercise helps with this. Sadie is crate trained and is relaxed when crated while I am gone. However, she doesn't necessarily enjoy pens or kennels and is an escape artist.

Sadie wants to please her human. She is a sensitive and loving gal, who loves to lay her head on my lap and be stroked. This relaxes her and she tends to doze. She also loves to sleep next to me on the love seat.

Sadie also loves to ride in the car. She is excited at first but calms down quickly. Sadie rides well either in the front or back seat.

Sadie would do well with a family with older children who can keep up with her energy. Also, she needs a family that understands a dog with some anxiety issues. Sadie gets along with other dogs and cats.

All of Sadie's vaccinations are current, and she is spayed and on heartworm preventative. She is also microchipped.

Sadie is being fostered in southern Illinois about 60 miles east of St. Louis. For more information, or to inquire about adopting Sadie, please email Chris techni@midwest.net at the Animal Protective Association of Southern Illinois (APA of So. IL).
