Pippa

November 28, 2004

Pippa has had several firsts in the last two weeks. She has learned to ring the bell on the back door when she wants to go outside. Not that she enjoys going out much. She still prefers to play inside, but in Michigan weather can you blame her? At night she still has to go potty in the middle of the night. After she goes out she runs right upstairs and burrows under the covers to get warm.

I was thinking about getting her a doggie sweater since she seems to despise the cold so much. Imagine my surprise when Pippa experienced her first snow! After chasing it, biting and barking it into submission she started having a blast. It must be a lot more fun to run high-speed figure 8s in 8 inches of snow then grass and mud. Pip went from only going out when absolutely necessary to begging to go out all the time. She could probably still use a sweater so she could stay out longer. We had so much fun watching her tear around at 90 miles an hour, jumping in the air, spinning in circles and leaping off the deck.

Pippa is really coming along with her obedience. Her table manners are getting better and her recall is great, except when chasing my cats. I have found she definitely behaves better when she gets lots of love time. So I try and cuddle her in my lap as much as possible. She likes to be held like a baby. And what a love bug she is!

Everyday I see more and more what a fabulous dog she is, and incredibly intelligent. She does have a bad habit of helping herself to food. Recently I found that she was getting into the cabinet where I keep the dog and cat food. I assumed I was leaving the door ajar until I saw her stand up on her hind legs, grab the hanging towel on the handle with both front paws and back up, pulling the door open. I have now seen her do it many, many times. She is far too smart for my own good!
