Update January, 2011: Hi thought you all would like to see one of the indoor dog parks I found for Benji. This is the doggie meet up I went to on Saturday at the Stay Dog Hotel. Benji didn't play much just walked around with the other dogs. There's a nice shot of him sniffing other dogs. Everyone thought he was adorable - which is true! However, on Sunday we went to a playdate at For Your K-9 in Melrose Park. It was MUCH BIGGER space and was more organized based on the dogs' temperment. He actually played and ran around with some of the other smaller dogs, expecially this one golden retriever puppy. He really wore him out! They had such a good time. We had to interview and be assessed before we could join this group. They checked his vaccinations, etc..
He is still shy around new adults, and barks at every man who comes to my house (except my son - he must smell like me or something). My landlords' daughter has been playing with him and now she is bugging her parents for a dog.
Update: Bean was adopted in December, 2010, and is now known as Benji.
Bean is a wonderfully athletic, enthusiastic young Border Collie mix. We don’t know much about his life before he ended up in a shelter, but we do know that shelter life was awfully hard for him. He’s doing much better now, though, in foster care. He loves other dogs, especially dogs who will play with him! And once he meets a new person, and decides they’re “safe,” he won’t forget them, and will greet them with enthusiasm every time.
Bean still has a bit of a puppy in him, and can get into a little bit of trouble if not supervised (“look! I brought you your shoe! And I only chewed it a little bit!”). He has attempted to make a new sport of cat-herding, and while he’s never even come close to hurting one, or offering any aggression, he probably shouldn’t go to a home with timid or easily frightened cats. He loves chasing small critters in the back yard, so a fence would be a good idea until his recall is rock-solid. However, he is athletic and intelligent enough that a fence won’t do much more than slow him down a bit, so he should only be outside when he’s supervised. On the flip side, though, he is remarkably motivated and quick to learn, both new tricks, and household rules. He very much wants to be a good dog.
Bean would do great in a family where he could get a lot of exercise, maybe a jogging partner, or some sort of canine sports. He would gain a lot of confidence with a good intro-obedience class (he could use a little work with leash-walking and some other skills too), and his enthusiasm and smarts would serve him well for agility or competitive obedience, and he’s truly a pleasure to train. He’s only recently discovered that if he brings a ball to a human, they’ll often throw it for him! This has been exciting for him, and he seems to be well on the road to a lifetime tennis-ball addiction.
