Volunteer Information

HOME

Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue is staffed entirely by volunteers who feel a particular fondness for Border Collies and all the defining traits of the breed. Since the Border Collie population has exploded in recent years, we are trying to cope with a continuously large number of rescues.

We are a web-based organization and, therefore, e-mail communication is crucial to the fulfillment of our duties and mission.  Most of our volunteers spend a minimum of 8 hours per week corresponding with adoption applicants and other volunteers or responding to e-mail inquiries about our dogs and organization.

Foster Homes

As a Foster Home with Great Lakes Border Collie Rescue, you will be providing the invaluable service of offering a temporary home for a Border Collie whose life may depend on it. While fostering, you will be expected to train your rescued BC in both basic manners and house training. Any necessary and pre-approved medical expenses for your foster will be reimbursed. As you probably expect, the most difficult part is giving them up to their forever homes. This bittersweet event is tempered however, in knowing they are going to a loving home and you are opening your home & heart to the next Border Collie in need.

Non-Foster Volunteers

Non-Fostering Volunteers fill a very necessary role in our organization. We desperately need help with the following activities:

  • Conducting phone interviews of potential adopters and serving as their primary contact as they go through our application & adoption process.
  • Counseling Border Collie owners about training and behavioral issues.
  • Transporting Dogs to/between foster homes
  • Fundraising:  If you are able to develop and lead a fundraising initiative, let us know.
