Benny Hill is part Border Collie; part Corgi. He is affectionate, silly, cuddly, energetic and playful. Everyone who meets him thinks he is adorable. Read on to hear his story.
An owner relinquishment (his original owners became ill and unable to care for him). When he first came into foster care, he was collar shy, got mouthy, got up on the kitchen counters, was not crate trained, had trouble with housebreaking, etc. With his foster dad, these issues were addressed. Now, he is housebroken, crate-trained, learned sit, lay down, shake, accepts a leash and is not so mouthy. Unfortunately, his foster dad’s work schedule increased and that would have left Benny Hill in a crate too long every day. So, through no fault of Benny Hill, he was transferred to my house where he continues to learn new things.
His house manners are outstanding. He has never chewed on anything he is not supposed to. Nyla-bones satisfy his chewing needs. Other than the occasional counter check when something intrigues him, he is extremely well behaved in the house.
When he has to go outside, he gives you a little bark or a whine. If you ignore, he will come stare at you and whine. Good boy!
Benny Hill will fence fight (but only when the other dog starts it). He does have a strong prey drive; loves to chase squirrels and birds (what dog doesn’t?!). Anyway, he used to bolt out the door when opened. With a sit, stay command, the door can be fully open and he will not go until he hears “release”. We started with the back door where he could be contained by a fence. We are just starting to work on the front door and, so far, he is showing great promise.
The other night, I made a fire. Despite the popping of the wood, Benny Hill was content to sit by my side and just watch. Oh, he also watches TV sometimes. Adorable!
Being inquisitive (unusual noises really get his attention), he may get on the counter to investigate. For instance, the first time he heard a blender, he wanted to come up to see what it was, but then sat down right away. We are working on his recall and walking properly on a leash – he can be easily distracted.
He loves to play tug and will retrieve a toy indoors. Outdoors, he’ll bring it halfway. Benny Hill loves to run and wrestle with other dogs; Benny Hill prefers medium to big dogs. With his prey drive, I would not recommend a cat or a small dog as a companion. Because he can be a bit mouthy at times, I would not recommend him for smaller kids. He would need a school age kid that could play tug with him or kick balls for him.
As I am writing this, Benny Hill is pressed up against my office chair and quietly laying at my feet waiting for me to be done. I have to be careful when I get up that I don’t run over him. He enjoys being wherever his people are.
Every day this boy shows improvement.
With continued training, Benny Hill will be your magnificent, dream companion. Are you ready for your new best bud?
