Nessa

August 22

As the days go by, Nessa continues to come out of her shell. She is a really sweet little girl. Nessa got spayed 2 weeks ago and never missed a beat. When she came home, she was so happy we didn't leave her there, she didn't care about the procedure she just had.

Nessa has been an excellent dog around our two children (ages 4 and 20 months). She has never shown any aggression towards them even when provoked. She does tend to jump up when excited, but seems to be making headway towards staying down. Nessa has never shown any herding tendencies, and gets along well with our two female dogs.

Nessa is still in search of her forever home. She is looking for someone who has the time and patience to work with her. She is extremely intelligent and has an endless supply of energy. She is a very fast runner and would likely excel at agility training. While she is beginning to settle down at home, Nessa will likely need to have a job of some sort.

Today we packed up the entire family (all four dogs and two children) and headed off to the dog park. We are trying to build Nessa's confidence with humans and other dogs. Sootie is a little wary of entering the park since everyone she meets appears to be four times her size.

Sootie is quick to love you and happily exchanges kisses for a belly rub. Our own dogs take the lead, and the small ones follow. Nessa has to stop and smell the flowers and Sootie keeps on trucking .....just trying to keep up.

All the dog owners stop to inquire what breeds Nessa and Sootie are. They stop to adore them and thank us for giving them a second chance. While we play ball with our Border Collie Aries, Nessa watches with a keen eye. After a couple times, Nessa is able to get in the action, but she is still learning to bring the ball back for the game to continue. Sootie is busy being a social butterfly and attracted all the dog owners away from their own dogs to come and play with her.

We are up bright and early and on our way to Indiana. With the help of some wonderful GLBCR volunteers we will bring two female pups out of Animal Control and start a journey down the road to recovery and hope. The transport was a success and the pups are now safe and sound.

On the way home we made a pit stop at the local pet supply store to pick up some goodies. We decided to name the puppies Nessa and Sootie, and they received their first ride in the shopping cart while we shopped for supplies. They were a little scared but once the staff saw them and greeted the girls with treats and kisses, they warmed up quickly.

Nessa and Sootie were up at 5:00am to greet me with a bark and to let me know they are ready to go outside. I opeed the door to the crate and they flew out like horses out of the gate at the Kentucky Derby. They play and frolic outside and go tinkle. I have to run inside to get the liver treats to reward their wonderful behavior. They are learning their names more and more as the days go on. Nessa (blk&white) is beginning to trust us more and more. Sootie (tri-color) is more willing to approach us and initiate playtime. At night they settle down well and are learning that "kennel up" means goodnight until the next day begins.

Nessa and Sootie play well with my two children, ages 19 months and 4 years. Hide and seek seems to be everyone's favorite. Nessa and Sootie seem to do a better job finding the children then they do hiding.

This afternoon after dinner we took a ride on the golf course to introduce the pups to wide open spaces. They like to investigate everything like little children do. But once called, they returned to our sides. Nessa loves to run and with her long legs, Sootie still tags along like a puppy unsure of her footing. After we tired everyone out (including ourselves), we returned home for a little R&R.
