WANTED: Quiet family for an older gentleman dog. Enjoys repeated ball throwing, slow jogs, petting, ear scratches and dog hugs.

Boofe (which I was told is Bulgarian for Honey) came into foster care because his owner, a Vietnam Veteran, had to have surgery and will not be able to leave a skilled nursing care facility. The caregiver of the veteran took Boofe for several months to see if she could place him in a good home, but she was not successful. Boofe is a wonderful boy with just a couple of bad habits that can be handled.

This guy is 12 -15 pounds overweight. We have placed him on a very restricted diet and have increased his exercise. He LOVES to play ball, so several times a day we play ball outside until he is tired. Even with his extra weight this guy can MOVE, and he can catch a ball in the air with all 4 feet off the ground. This is doing wonders for his waistline, as he is down 3 pounds as of April 12th.

Boofe has been a wonderful house guest. He is fully housebroken, does not chew on anything that is not his, and does not beg at the table. He does not counter surf or rush out the door. He is not interested in a dog playmate, but he loves his human! He does not like other dogs in his face or jumping on him. This is why I don’t think he would do well with children under the age of 11 or so. Back to his bad habit: he was allowed to charge and bark at people entering the house, and will snark at them if they try to reach out to pet him. We have instead been teaching him to lie down with no barking when a person enters. We will then allow him to greet them with a toy in his mouth so they can briefly play with him. Then they are old friends and they can pet him and play ball. With this approach, he quickly warms up to new people.

Boofe is very healthy. With continued weight loss he will be a great guy for an active family. He is current on all vaccinations and is negative on his heartworm test.

Do you have room in your family for this fun loving older gentleman?
